Growing up in a South Asian community it was difficult to share personal worries and fears. There has always been a lack of trust. When I ask myself what could have been the reason behind this? I find myself dissecting through certain community habits, such as spreading rumours, gossip and misinformation. This causes a hindrance in the trust to be established, making confidentiality farfetched. I can empathise and understand how difficult it may be for some people to believe that confidentiality can exist. In counselling, confidentiality is my number one priority. Everything that the clients bring in session stays between me and my client; unless it is a judicial matter.

What Is Confidentiality?

What is Counselling?

The process of talking about and working through our personal problems with a counsellor or a psychotherapist is called counselling. A counsellor or a psychotherapist should be a trained and a qualified professional, who belongs to a UK registered professional body. The therapy can be both long term and short term. Psychotherapists and counsellors provide clients with a safe and confidential space where they can explore feelings and emotions around issue; both past and present. This is achieved by addressing their problems in a positive manner and by helping the clients clarify the issues, develop strategies, and increase self-awareness.
Sometimes all we need is someone to speak to, and this may not always be possible. Some people may not have anyone to talk to, or they may feel like they will be judged or misunderstood. There is also the fear of stigma and feeling that it is a taboo subject. Counselling is a confidential environment which is free from judgment.
